Al-Fayez: Building a sound family means building a strong and secure society

01-14-2017

"The family is the cornerstone of society; building a sound family that believes in higher values and principles means building a strong and secure society; to achieve that, we need to empower and maintain the structure and stability of the Jordanian family and its members," said Faisal Al-Fayez, Speaker of the Jordanian Senate during the kick-off of the third workshop organized by NCFA for parliamentarians and attended by representatives from governmental and non-governmental institutions in a bid to lobby support for the "Protection against Family Violence" Draft Law.
Al-Fayez added: "This workshop is of great importance, as it addresses the protection draft law at a time that is witnessing the occurrence of practices which are strange to our values and norms, like the violence that is spreading on campus and the prevalence of drugs, suicides and assaults against children. These abnormal and strange acts have never been the norm and have never been considered as societal phenomena until now".
"In spite of the efforts exerted in this regard and although they are not accepted morally or religiously and are criminalized by law, these acts still persist; which demands greater robust remedies starting with the enactment of tougher legislation that address these aberrations more strictly", emphasized Al-Fayez.
He also stressed the need to do more research into the effects of social media on the family, especially on children and minors, and on society as a whole, particularly as they have made children more isolated and inclined to acquire alien values and habits that are against our social norms. The negative use of social media, as Al-Fayez believes, has increased the sense of hostility and reclusiveness within the one family leading to deteriorated relationships and instability among its members.
On his part, NCFA Secretary-General Fadel AL-Hmoud indicated that the meeting, with this level of participation, underscores Jordan's belief in the importance of the family and its role in building a strong society.
The meeting is one of a series of workshops devoted to lobbying the support for the new draft law which was prepared in cooperation with a technical committee formed from representatives from: the Ministry of Social Development, the Judicial Council, Supreme Judge Department, Public Security Directorate/ Family Protection Department, Jordan River Foundation, the Jordanian National Commission for Women and Jordanian Women's Union. The provisions of the new law are said to touch on all areas of interest to the family and will ensure the stability of the family and society in return.
Al-Hmoud also noted that "since its establishment, NCFA has paid utmost care for the interests of the Jordanian family and its members in implementation of HM King Abdullah's vision which underlines the need to give particular attention to the interests of the family and its members", commending the unyielding support of the Senate and the House of Representatives to NCFA's efforts and activities.
During the workshop, Director of the Shariah Judiciary Institute in the Supreme Judge Department, Judge Dr. Mansour Tawalbeh, gave a briefing on the compelling reasons for this new draft law.
