Second workshop on "Protection against Family Violence Law"

06-14-2017

A second two-day workshop on "Protection against Family Violence Law" kicked off in the Dead Sea organized by NCFA with the participation of several MPs from the House of Representatives and representatives from relevant governmental and non-governmental institutions.
During the workshop, NCFA Secretary-General Fadel Al-Hmoud indicated that this workshop complements another workshop held the week before to mobilize support for the draft law. The previous workshop yielded several key outputs allowing for more expansion in the preparation of the new law which will be built on during the coming workshops.
NCFA works under direct instructions from HM Queen Rania AL-Abdullah, Chairperson of NCFA Board of Trustees, to reinforce a participatory approach among partners from governmental and non-governmental institutions in keeping with NCFA's mandate contained in its Law to review and redraft family-related legislation.
On his part, Director of the Judicial Institute in the Supreme Judge Department Judge Dr. Mansour At-Tawalbeh said that there are underlying reasons for drafting this law including: to enhance stability and tranquility of the individual, the family and society; give family violence offenders a second chance to reform; improve ways and procedures of the Family Protection Department; ensure the provision of family, social and psychological counseling services for the family and its members (victims or perpetrators); and determine family violence reporting cases and mechanisms and dispute settlement procedures in family violence cases.
According to At-Tawalbeh, compelling reasons also include the need to provide for measures in the law to be taken by courts when they rule for dispute settlement and protective orders, and the penalties for violating these measures and orders.

It is to be noted that the drafting committee comprises members and experts from the Ministry of Social Development, the Judicial Council, Public Security Directorate/Family Protection Department, Jordan River Foundation, National Commission for Women Affairs, Jordanian Women's Union, and NCFA.
